Effective strategies to change your life quickly

How to change your life in under six months

​It takes time to undo a lifetime of bad choices, but you’d be surprised how much you can accomplish in six months if you’re committed and take consistent action.
 
You can make a huge change in your life in just half a year. This is enough time to make good progress without being overwhelmed by some huge goal like, “I want to be worth $50 million in five years.” Six months is manageable.

Use these strategies to change your life in just six months:

SET FOUR (4) GOALS. Set a goal in each of the following areas: Financial, Health, Career, and Other. Most of us could use a money, health, and career boost. That leaves one miscellaneous goal.

  • Financial. You might want to set a goal for your bank account balance, earnings, or pay off your debt.
  • Health. Need to lose a few pounds? Want to bench press 250 pounds? Follow a healthy diet for six months?
  • Career. Perhaps you want a promotion, to change companies, or to change fields.
  • Miscellaneous. You could set a goal to travel somewhere, master a song on the piano, get a jump on learning a language, or buy a new car. The possibilities are endless.

A good goal is something that you believe is possible but would be challenging.
It should also be something that makes you excited when you think about achieving it.

​MEASURE YOUR CURRENT SITUATION. Understand where you’re starting. If you want to increase your savings account by $10,000, you’d best know your current balance. The same goes for your weight if you’re trying to lose weight. If you want to run a 5-minute mile, how fast can you run a mile right now?

CREATE A PLAN. Based on where you are, and where you want to go, what is a logical plan to get there? Remember that you have six months and plan accordingly.

DETERMINE THE HABITS YOUR NEED TO ENSURE SUCCESS. If you want to lose weight, your exercise and diet habits are important. Savings and spending habits are often important for financial goals. Sending a certain number of resumes might be important for certain career goals.

  • Your habits have a tremendous impact on the results you achieve in life. Good habits yield good results.

SET SHORT-TERM GOALS. It’s hard to stay focused on a goal for six months, and it’s easy to procrastinate. Set short-term goals that lead to your long-term goals. Sixty days is about right for a short-term goal.

  • Set 60-day and 120-day goals for each of your 6-month goals.

TAKE ACTION. Even with the best plans in the world, nothing happens until you take action to reach your goals.

KEEP A JOURNAL. Record your feelings, plans, ideas, results, and observations. You’ll get a kick out of looking back on your journal someday.

MEASURE YOUR PROGRESS. Regularly measure your progress. It’s important to know how you’re doing, so you can make any adjustments. How will you know if your diet and exercise plans are working if you never get on the scale?

BE FLEXIBLE IN YOUR APPROACH. You’re probably not going to create the perfect plan right out of the gate. There will be a lot of fine tuning along the way. Stick to your goals but be willing to change how you accomplish them.

CROSS THE FINISH LINE. Giving up is the only way to fail. Keep going, even when you feel like quitting.

What can you accomplish in six months? Take a guess and see if you’re right! You can do a lot in six months. In fact, you can probably accomplish more in the next six months than you have in the last five years.

It’s easy to fall into a routine that does little more than maintain your life. You can do much better! Set a few goals and work hard for just six months. You’ll be pleased with the results.

How to find the ideal job 

Work is called work for a reason. But, the right career can help make your life more fulfilling. Making a wise choice can enable you to avoid a lot of misery and fund a lifestyle that you enjoy.
 
The wrong choice can lead to financial challenges and it’s not fun to go to a job you don’t like day after day.
 
Use these ideas to choose a career that’s right for you:

What do you like to do? Unless you’re fortunate, you’ll be working for quite a while. It would be smart to find a career that centers around something that you enjoy. Imagine spending 40+ years doing something that you don’t enjoy. 

  • While you don’t have to keep the same career for the rest of your life, you can lose ground each time you make a switch.
  • What do you like to do? What are your interests? What could you see yourself doing for a decade or more and be happy?
  • What do you really dislike? This question is just as important.

What are your strengths? The best careers are enjoyable and take advantage of your strengths. What are you naturally good at? What have you become good at because you’ve spent so much time learning or practicing?

  • Not all of your strengths will be transferable to a career, but some of them will transfer quite nicely. Ask yourself what you can do better than most people. 

What are the long-term options? Some careers have better long-term prospects than others. Think about what you could do 20 years down a particular career path. Is there the possibility to advance? Could you use the skills you build in that job and transfer them to another? 
  • Avoid only thinking about the next couple of years. You’ll likely be working more than just 3-5 years.

What type of work environment do you prefer? Do you like the community feel of an endless series of cubicles? Your own office? Do you want to work outdoors? In a manufacturing setting? A laboratory? Suit and tie? Jeans and a t-shirt? What environment appeals to you?
​
  • What lifestyle do you prefer? This includes income, city/country, living out of a suitcase versus going into the same work location each day. Do you like to work nights, so your days are free?
  • Visualize your ideal lifestyle and consider the various careers available to you.
  • Consider your educational credentials versus what a career requires. Doctors need to attend medical school. A teacher in a public school needs a teaching license.
  • Determine how much additional education you’ll require for a particular career and whether or not you’re willing to acquire it. If you’re against additional schooling, then you’ll face certain limitations. 

What careers fit your answers? Taking all of the above into account, what careers seem like a good fit to you? 
  • The perfect career will be something you love, that you’re good at, that also fits your dream lifestyle and work environment. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities in the future.
 
If none of your options are appealing to you, you might want to consider going back to school for additional education. Another few years of schooling might sound dreadful, but a few years is a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of your life.
 
A poor career choice can be costly down the road. Take the time to make a wise decision. It will be time well-spent.

How to list volunteer work experience on your resume

Your unpaid work experience is important

Are you looking for a job? Thinking about a career change? Want to just earn a little extra money? Reach deep to discover and articulate more of your skills and you can land the position of your dreams.
 
Whatever your situation, you may find yourself wanting to showcase some of your non-paid work experiences. What constitutes non-paid work experience? Here are some examples:

  1. If you've ever led an organized group for children, you have non-paid experience under your belt. Being a Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, or Eagle Scout Leader involves numerous skills and talents. More about that later.
  2. Volunteer stints certainly count. If you've ever been a volunteer, you know the dedication, skill, and work it requires.
  3. Being a member of your local school's Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) can be considered non-paid work experience.
  4. Serving on community committees would certainly count.
  5. Perhaps you've done a lot of babysitting over the years for neighbors, friends, and family members. Babysitting requires many skills that can be showcased on a resume or in an interview.

Exploring Skills and Experiences

Determining the skills used and the tasks completed for each non-paid work experience takes a little time. Let's consider the above-listed examples and review sample skills and duties for each.

For Scout Leader or similar "leader" positions of organized children's groups, what duties did you perform? How could you phrase them so that they're relevant to a work environment?
  • Responsible for management of weekly meetings.
  • Performed scheduling duties: Set schedules for when, where, and how long to meet
  • Utilized planning skills to plan weekly, monthly, or yearly activities.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills:  Gathered necessary supplies, produced appropriate purchase orders, and selected materials.
  • Designed and managed the budget.
  • Prepared reports for the local organization that oversaw the group.

When you volunteer, skills and experiences will vary depending on the type of volunteer work performed. For the sake of illustration, let's assume you did volunteer work for a local social service organization.
  • Consistently reported for duties on time and followed all instructions.
  • Performed sorting and delivery of daily mail twice per week.
  • Planned and carried out mass mailings of program materials.
  • Provided unpaid staff leadership during the Supervisor's absence.
  • Designed and wrote the  monthly program Newsletter.
 
As a member of a PTO, you might have performed a variety of duties that can be showcased on your resume as non-paid work experience.
  • Acted as Committee Chair for fundraising events.
  • Planned and coordinated fundraising events for the school.
  • Served as Co-Chair of Meet and Greet Committee.
  • Developed activities to encourage more parents to join PTO.
  • Responsible for increasing PTO membership by 3% per year over a three-year period.
 
For this example, you served as a volunteer in the fictitious Welcome to Our Town group. The following duties could be noted on your resume as non-paid work experience:
  • Developed marketing flyers.
  • Coordinated meetings of Welcome to Our Town staff.
  • Supervised volunteer staff of four. Supervising volunteers can be a weighty asset; most hiring managers know how challenging it can be to manage people who aren't being paid.
  • Responsible for setting up exhibits and providing information about the town at local publicity events.
  • Conducted phone interviews with new community members.
 
Being a babysitter involves several skills and duties and a lot of responsibility.
  • Provided childcare to four children, ages 2 to 4, Monday through Friday, over a two-year span.
  • Planned, organized, and conducted field trips and tours to local museums and parks for the children.
  • Kept documentation on each child to share with parents regarding the child's behavior and activities throughout the day.
 
Begin a list now of your unpaid work experience, compiling the position and approximate month and year you started and ended each "job." Use the above examples to get ideas for the list of skills necessary for each experience and the duties you performed. Now you can showcase your non-paid work experiences on your resume to help you attain your career goals.

​It’s time to move on to greener pastures! It can be exciting to leave one job for another.
 
However, you can’t just turn out the lights and wave goodbye on your way out to the parking lot. There are several actions that need to be taken to ensure a smooth transition for you and your replacement. It’s professional and intelligent to leave your company in a positive way.

Take these necessary steps to leave your company properly: 
  1. Have another job lined up. Unless you’re highly confident or wealthy, it would be much wiser to have another job waiting for you. Your savings can drain a lot faster than you might think, especially if you have a lot of free time on your hands.

    • It’s wise to ensure that you won’t suffer financially when you leave your current employment.

  2. Give your letter of resignation. Two-three weeks of notice is customary. It’s not required. You’re free to leave your job without notice, just as you can be fired without notice. However, it’s polite and the smart way to handle the situation.

  3. Clean up your company laptop and phone. You might be a model employee, but you’d probably prefer that your employer not see all of your text messages and emails. While you’re at it, delete your browser history and any personal documents from your laptop and the company server.

    • If you’ve downloaded any software for personal use, be sure to delete that, too.

    • Delete any saved passwords from your web browser. You don’t want that information to fall into the hands of a stranger!

  4. Clean out your office. Go through your files and purge those items that don’t need to be saved. Remove any personal items and take them home. Your office should be ready for the next person when you’re finished.

  5. Avoid burning bridges. It can be tempting to tell your boss and certain coworkers what you really think but think twice before taking that course of action. It’s surprising how often that type of behavior can come back to haunt you.

    • You never know what the future may hold. It’s best to keep your negative thoughts to yourself.

  6. Go out on good terms. This isn’t the same as not burning bridges. Make an effort to go out on a positive note, not just a neutral note. Say goodbye to everyone and thank them. You never know who might be in a position to hire you one day. You also might be in need of a recommendation at some point.

As employers do recognize abilities such as decision-making, management, creativity, and more in a self-employed person, they also tend to fret and frown. They question other details such as business profitability or your coachability. In other words, will you be open to learn their ways and follow their rules? Will you be “coachable”?
 
As you think of updating your resume, you may want to implement these ideas throughout your job search efforts. Regardless of the length of your self-employment, the right attitude and some planning hacks will help you find the ideal job a little easier.

Preparing your resume

  1. Highlight your accomplishments. What you have done in the past speaks volumes about your POTENTIAL for the future. If there is anything bragworthy, it must be used to make you stand out.

  2. Present relevant qualifications. Your job may have entailed a variety of responsibilities. Today, your job is to create content for your resume in a way that it responds to prospective employers’ needs. Focus on the job description’s requirements and detect the priorities. Include those qualifications in your resumes. Don’t focus on your other qualifications.

  3. Brand your operation. Your operation IS a business, even if your office is in your Livingroom. Choose a name for your business. Be sure it is relevant to the products or services you offer. When you present your self-employment experience on your resume, it is always more impressive when it is listed properly with a business name, location, and dates, along with your title as either Founder, Partner, Director, Freelancer, Owner, Manager, etc. Pick a name that will help you brand your business.

  4. Build a reputation. In today’s digital world, one of the best ways to build a reputation for your work is to gather online reviews. Aside from the standard platforms where customers write reviews (i.e.: Google, Yelp, Facebook, etc.), there are niche websites for specific industries. For example, www.RealSelf.com is a site used for plastic surgeries or related services; www.TripAdvisor.com is a site used for the travel industry. Choose a few platforms to promote your business and inspire your clients or any other professional who has worked with you to vouch for you online. It will help you be a stronger candidate, as you move on with how to interview for a new job.

Tips for Networking and Interviewing

  1. Prepare to answer questions. Prepare yourself to answer questions about why you want to work for a company or for someone else. Your answer can only be a “positive” response. Answer the question in a positive way. For example, you can briefly elaborate on the fact that you need a new challenge.

  2. Be adaptable. Many employers or recruiters may wonder about whether you are set in your own ways as a self-employed person or if you will be coachable and trainable. When in an interview, do talk about your ability to adapt to changing demands and new or different ways of doing things.

  3. Corporate culture. Here is another concern… Hiring managers may question whether or not you will fit-in their organization or team(s). Be sure to do your part well. Study the company, its mission, values, and culture. You will find that proper preparation will often remove obstacles from even surfacing.

  4. Get recommendations. One of the best ways to find a new job is through referrals. A recommendation is still a very powerful tool and should not be underestimated.  Network with your clients for leads and ask them to have you in mind if they hear about any opportunities that may match your qualifications. You will be surprised at the leads that may come your way from those you did not expect.

  5. Prepare Your Own Portfolio. Once you create your own portfolio (also called a brag book), it will be much easier to market your services instead of just responding to job advertisements. Which companies interest you the most? Send them your portfolio to market yourself better.

  1. Expand your options. Some hiring managers will be more open to considering candidates with entrepreneurial backgrounds. If you encounter too much resistance, move on to a more welcoming climate.

  2. Don’t underestimate start-ups. Many entrepreneurs will greatly appreciate your entrepreneurial endeavors. Chances are high they will also understand your situation very well. Find out who they are and grow alongside them.

  3. Think long-term. In some cases, being self-employed may increase the time it takes you to find your next position. Maintain a positive attitude and surround yourself with supportive friends.

Give yourself credit for having the courage and creativity to run a business. As you re-enter the corporate world, look for employers who will appreciate your background and welcome the contribution you can make.
